Sub-Saharan Africa Region (Ivory Coast)

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL) aimed to give midwives and nurses the skills and knowledge to implement adult training activities on breastfeeding through the Sub-Saharan Africa – Breastfeeding Education Initiative (SSA-BFEI).

Training

The project consisted of a one-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop titled “Promoting Breastfeeding Education in Sub-Saharan Africa”. This event took place on 12 December 2023 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Hosts

The training was hosted by UNITAR in collaboration with its International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL) Dakar with the goal of bringing together together 25 nurses and midwives. The main aim was to provide a variety of educational tools that will target diverse audiences at policy, organizational, and community levels on protecting, promoting, and maintaining breastfeeding.

Building on the Regional Training held in Dakar, Senegal the Sub-Saharan Africa – Breastfeeding Education Initiative (SSA-BFEI), The ToT was primarily aligned with SDGs 2 and 3, as promoting breastfeeding education includes ending hunger, improving nutrition, and promoting health and well-being. The ToT sought to equip participants with the necessary skills to:
  1. Develop practical tools to support breastfeeding mothers at home, health centres, in the workplace and in society.
  2. Communicate the importance of breastfeeding to health professionals, mothers and to caregivers/partners.
  3. Support breastfeeding mothers at home, at the health center, at work and in the community.
